Growth teardown / activation

The merchants you already paid to acquire, and the ones who stall before their first payment

A recovery layer for tourism businesses that start a Tab application and then go quiet at the document step. Built additively, on top of the funnel Tab already ships.

By Emre Kent for the Growth Marketing Lead role · 16 September 2026 · Built from a public merchant signup, not from any Tab data I have not seen.

What this is. On 16 September 2026 I opened business.tab.travel, clicked Apply now, and walked the whole merchant application as if I were a small Turkish tour operator, using placeholder business details. I stopped at the document-upload screen and landed on an application marked Need more information. Then I read the two emails Tab sent me. This is what I saw, and the lifecycle layer I would add to keep those started applications from going cold.

Everything here is a hypothesis from one public walk-through. I have no access to Tab's conversion rates, funnel analytics or roadmap, and nothing below assumes I do.

01 / The application, as a merchant experiences it

The signup is thorough for a good reason: this is regulated money movement, and know-your-customer checks are not optional. I am not proposing to cut a single step. I am mapping where a real business owner is most likely to pause, so the follow-up can meet them there.

  1. Lead capture low friction

Name, business name, email, business country. One short screen. This is the moment paid and outbound spend pays off.

  2. Qualification self-selection

Business type, online profiles (website, TripAdvisor, OTA, social), a business description, average monthly revenue, and a password. The revenue screen warns that accounts under roughly USD 1,000 per month may be restricted, which quietly filters out the smallest businesses. Useful, but worth knowing it happens here.

  3. Account and business details low friction

Contact details, how they heard about Tab, business address, and the currency they advertise in. Easy to complete in one sitting.

  4. Verification rising effort

Business owner confirmation, whether the business is a registered company, legal entity name, and who the bank account belongs to. The owner is now being asked for legal and banking facts they may need to look up.

  5. Bank details and documents the cliff

Bank country, bank name, account number, account-holder address, then four uploads: photo ID, a recent bank statement, business registration, and evidence of business activities. This is where I stopped, and where I would expect the steepest drop. A day-tour guide in an emerging market can start this on their phone and simply not have a business-registration PDF and a three-month bank statement to hand in that moment.

What Tab already does well here, and I would lean on: the document screen lists acceptable alternatives inline (a bank-app screenshot instead of a full statement, for example), and the completion page invites merchants to try a payment link and the checkout flow before they finish applying. That is a real product-led hook most fintechs do not offer. The follow-up below is built to amplify both, not to replace them.

02 / What arrived in my inbox, and the moments that were silent

Within minutes of starting, Tab sent two clean, well-built emails: a welcome with my username and a Finish my Application button, and a confirm-your-email request. Both are good. After I stalled at the document step and my status became Need more information, nothing followed that spoke to that moment.

Moment in the journeyEmail todayGap, as a hypothesis

Stalled at documents (status: Need more information)None observedNo message naming the exact step left, the accepted alternatives, or a one-tap way back in
Still stalled after a few daysNone observedNo reassurance, no proof from a similar business, no offer of a short call

03 / The recovery layer I would add

One trigger, segmented by the last stage completed and by business type and region. Every touch points back to a single resumable link. Timing is a starting hypothesis, to be tuned against real completion data.

The +24 hour email, written out

Draft copy, written by me as an illustration. It leans on facts already on Tab's own screens (the accepted alternatives, the four document types) and invents no policy.

04 / Why this is a lead-generation problem, not a support one

Every channel this role owns, Google, Meta, outbound email, referrals, partnerships, is measured on the cost to acquire a merchant who actually starts processing. An application that dies at the document step is demand you already paid for that never becomes revenue. It makes your true cost per activated merchant higher than any channel dashboard shows, because the dashboard counts the click, not the payout.

A recovery layer does not compete with the acquisition budget. It multiplies it. Lift the started-to-activated rate by a few points and every pound of paid and outbound spend buys more live merchants, with no change to targeting or creative. That is the cheapest growth in the funnel, and it sits exactly between the demand this role generates and the revenue the business counts.

05 / What I would put on the dashboard

Stage completion

Start to submit rate at each of the five stages, so the real cliff is measured, not assumed.

Submit to approved

How many complete the documents and clear verification, split by business type and country.

Time to first payment

From application start to first live transaction. The number the whole funnel exists to move.

Recovery lift

Completions attributable to the sequence, held against a control, so the layer earns its place or gets cut.
